INFLUENCE OF COMMUNITY RADIO IN AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on the  influence of community Radio in agricultural development using Caritas 98.7fm  as case study. To achieve this 3 research questions were formulated.  The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of the entire Staff of  Caritas 98.7fm Enugu state. In determining the sample size, the researcher purposively selected 35 respondents while 30 respondents were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and percentage. The result of the findings reveals that; the people largely uneducated in the community has an average living standard; Radio is said to have influenced Agricultural Development of its community to a certain high extent; Increase In customers patronage,mass Awareness,Large increase in sales and revenue, Identifying consumers needs and ideas ect. are benefits derived from programmes aired by Caritas 98.7fm.

Based on the findings, the researcher recommended among others that the management of the radio station should liaise with the local government offices of the Enugu State Agricultural Development Project (ESADP) and Enugu State Agricultural Supply Company (EASAC) to get experts on different fields of agriculture to contribute in the agriculture practices process; the issue of audience participation should be viewed seriously and immediate action should be taken to address it because community radio derives its strength and popularity from community participation, no community radio can survive without participation of people as it demands 70% participation of the community people.
